When owner, Jay Brewer, opened Prehistoric Pets, as Pet Country, in 1988 he focused on providing quality pets and service to every customer and although our inventory of exotic reptiles has expanded and the animals themselves have grown and grown and grown, so much so we have had to relocate twice, first to a 5000 sq ft location in 1992, and most recently to a 10,000 sq ft location in 2000, his focus hasn’t changed since the beginning.
Prehistoric Pets’ was the first of its kind designed by Jay to create a zoo-like atmosphere with the philosophy “build it and they will come.” This philosophy proved correct and new customers started visiting the store to observe exotic reptiles, which are not displayed at even the largest of zoos and this collection of specialized and rare reptiles is what sets us apart from anything else on the market even today!
Jay Brewer has used every obstacle in his path to create the niche that Prehistoric Pets has settled into, but he won’t settle for second best. Always on the cutting edge, The Reptile Zoo is the newest creative venture for Jay, with a 2000 gallon pond in the middle of the store, filled with giant tropical fish with plenty of turtles to feed to the displays and exhibits with thousands of exotic reptiles of all sizes.
The Reptile Zoo includes a new exhibit for our giant Reticulated Python “TWINKIE” weighing in at over 340 lb, making her the world’s largest snake! Also a TWO-HEADED snake, 150 lb EYELESS snake and hundreds of other oddities and exotics. While in The Reptile Zoo there are also several opportunities for hands-on interactions with some of our guests favorite animals. Not to mention our store mascot “Brando”, the 6 FT MONITOR, and our 100 lb tortoises who roam the zoo freely.
We are able to use the profits not only to cover our overhead and feed all the hungry mouths, but also to improve our facilities, remodeling our current enclosures, providing more available employees so that every person walks away happy, only to come see the animals (and us) again soon. We will be continually working very hard to improve our smaller enclosures and build world class new enclosures, like our current ALLIGATOR project!
So if you haven’t been here in a while, you’re missing out!
